Staff Farewell

Staff farewell

Key Points

  • We farewell and wish the very best to Mrs Kay, Dr Hastie and Mr Penprase who have each embarked on their retirement.
  • After gaining permanent positions in other high schools, we farewell and wish the best in their careers to Ms Smith and Ms Siuhengalu.
  • We also extend a warm welcome to our new staff and look forward to the skills and experiences they each bring with them to Gymea.

We Farewell

At the end of last year, we said farewell to a number of our committed staff who are moving on to new pursuits this year.

Our Deputy Principal, Mrs Angela Kay is also taking leave this year as she heads into her retirement. Mrs Kay has been Deputy Principal at Gymea since 2012 and has enjoyed working with our staff to bring about many opportunities for our students, including organising Europe trip experiences that are still so fondly remembered by many students. Mrs Kay most cherishes working with our students to bring about changes they wanted to see for their school, including long standing changes such as updating our school uniform. We wish Ms Kay all the very best for an enjoyable and relaxing retirement.

Dr Kelvin Hastie has been a dedicated music teacher with the Department since 1980. His unwavering passion for music has seen so many of our students throughout his many years at Gymea Technology High School supported in exploring their own musical interests, talents and styles. Dr Hastie is also taking leave this year as he moves into his retirement. We wish him an enjoyable and restful year and for his retirement plans ahead.

Ms Kristen Smith has been with us in the English Department since 2018. Ms Smith is a passionate English teacher who began her teaching career with us and jumped into every opportunity presented to her. From Year Advising, specialty sports programs to guiding our Learning Support team, Ms Smith enthusiastically got involved and enjoyed

so many positive relationships with our students and staff across the school. We wish her all the very best in her new permanent role.

We also wish farewell to our French teacher, Ms Louisa Siuhengalu who has been relieving for Ms Le for the past three years while she has been on leave. Getting involved in many cultural activities across the school including leading a team of boys through the traditional Haka at our Multicultural Day in 2019, Ms Siuhengalu’s positive and friendly approach in everything she does will be sorely missed by staff and students alike. We send our best wishes with Ms Siuhengalu as she begins her new journey in her permanent role.

Staffing Changes

As we farewell our staff members above, we will see a number of roles changes this year:

  • Mrs Katherine Edwards will be relieving in the position of Deputy Principal for Years 7, 9 and 11 this year.
  • With that, Mr Tim Reynolds will be relieving in the Head Teacher Mathematics role.
  • Introducing Mrs Evelyn Kalergis from our Science faculty who will be taking over the Year Advising role from Ms Smith for Year 9.

Welcome to Our New Staff

We also would like to introduce some new faces to our Gymea team:

  • Ms Belinda Morrison will be stepping into the Music role this year. Ms Morrison comes with a wealth of experience having graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and is eager to meet our aspiring musicians.
  • Ms Anna Hondronikolas will be joining our English Faculty to replace Ms Smith. Ms Hondronikolas is looking forward to working with our dedicated English team to continue inspiring our students.
  • Ms Josie Patrick will be joining us in the TAS Faculty. Ms Patrick has a flair for Design and Technology and we are excited to see her put her skills into practice with our students.
  • Ms Rebekah Silvidio will be replacing Ms Siuhengalu as our French teacher this year.
    Bienvenue Ms Silvidio!
  • Mr Thomas Oakden will be joining our English Department to assist with the further expansion of our specialised literacy programs this year.
  • Likewise, Mr Les Jackson will be joining our Mathematics Department to assist with the numeracy side of these programs. Both Mr Oakden and Mr Jackson come to us with years of experience as an English and Mathematics teacher respectively and we look forward to their contributions to our combined Literacy and Numeracy team.
  • Ms Asher Lees will be returning to us this year and will also assist in our Literacy and Numeracy programs.
A warm welcome to all of our new staff this year! We look forward to working alongside you as you immerse yourselves in this fantastic school of ours.
