E-bikes, Bikes and Scooters

Riding Bikes, E-bikes and Scooters to and from School

At Gymea Technology High School we support family decisions regarding the riding of bikes, e-bikes and scooters to and from school. We are committed to promoting legal, safe, responsible bike, e-bike and scooter use among students, in accordance with NSW road rules, Transport for NSW guidelines, and Department of Education policies. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of all students and the wider school community.

Families and students need to make decisions in bringing their valuable bikes and scooters to school, knowing they are accepting responsibility for their security and safe use.  We have created an area for these to be placed during the school day.

Definition of an E-Bike

An e-bike (electric bicycle) is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that assists the rider when pedalling. Under NSW law, the motor must:

  • Not exceed a power output of 250 watts and pedal assistance up to 25 km/h,
  • Have a 200-watt motor without pedal sensors.

E-bikes that exceed these specifications are classified as motor vehicles and are not permitted at school. E-Scooters and E-Skateboards are NOT permitted by law.

For more information refer to the official guidelines by Transport NSW and Education NSW requirements.

Student Expectations

Students must:

  • Use a safe and legal e-bike that complies with Transport for NSW recommendations.
  • Wear a bike helmet at all times.
  • Follow all NSW road rules, including speed limits, traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.
  • Ride safely and  responsibly, sharing roads and paths respectfully with others.
  • Use designated cycling routes where available.
  • Not carry passengers on the e-bike.
Bike Security

Students must:

  • Follow staff instructions regarding the use of bikes, e-bikes and scooters on school grounds.
  • Ride their bike, e-bike or scooter at pedestrian pace, or walk it within school grounds.
  • Leave their bike, e-bike or scooter in the designated parking area near the gym throughout the day.
  • Students are responsible and strongly encouraged to secure their own bikes, e-bikes or scooters using an appropriate robust lock.
Safety Considerations
  • The school has provided road safety information to students about e-bike use.
  • Parents/guardians must ensure that their child’s e-bike is in safe working condition. Any reckless, unsafe or non-compliant behaviour (e.g. speeding, riding on footpaths illegally, not following road or other safety rules, not wearing a helmet), may result in loss of privilege to ride to school.
